Banned: Why Narrative is a Naughty Word

We.

Are.

Here.

The Buffalo Bills are 1-0. We snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. We foiled Hail Murray: Part Deux. We beat a team the pundits said we should have beaten. In the words of Shill Bellycheat: “We’re On to…

Miami.

And yet, the days and hours leading up to the beginning of an NFL season have been agonizing: rife with anticipation, inflated with unwarranted hopes, or tinged with the knowledge of an inevitable “rebuild year”. Some football fans lean into these feelings, while others practice the sublime art of evasion as long as they can.

My wife and I got a request to read a book for our church’s weekly reading series. We have a book series where church members will read a book, and film the reading, then publish it online. My wife and I happened to be recording a reading on Saturday afternoon, just prior to the Bills’ home opener. Here’s the cover of the book my wife and I read for our Church’s weekly book series:

NPR did a nice little piece on the book, in case you’re interested in it. Check it out at the link, below:

Now, I know what you’re asking: “What in Hell’s bells does this have to do with the Buffalo Bills?”

Hang on to your pews and your Psalter Hymnals, choirboys and gals: This will be a ride!

If you’ve read anything I’ve penned for Numb Bills Fan, you’ll know I can get a little snarky. I’m forever thankful that Dave lets me vent my less-than-kosher diatribes on this platform. And while I usually keep my public accounts fairly tame, I may have angered some of the Scions of Information, this afternoon. I might have poked the bear with a sharper quill than they anticipated. It’s possible that I’ve prodded the perfunctory purveyors of preference in an unprofessional manner. The platform (and my most egregious post) are linked, below:

Here’s a screenshot of my post title, and precisely what I said:

Four swift, amenable responses ensued… Followed by this:

So, wondering why my topic was closed, I checked my account, and saw the following:

Curious as to why my topic had been closed, I sent a “PM” (i.e. a Personal Message) to the moderator who had closed my topic. I’ll just include screenshots of my conversation with the moderator, below:

Oddly enough, the moderator in question had no response when I jovially agreed to “play along.” That was it... No response... Nada... Nil...

So, getting back to that book my wife and I read on Saturday, for our church’s reading series, I just found it interesting that the book's premise pointed out the faulty logic inherent in banning free speech...

And, then, I walked right into a buzzsaw of mod-prod silencing...

On a Buffalo Bills message board…

So, if we aren’t allowed to question whether or not there is bias among the talking heads, are we allowed to question anything?

You may ask whether or not this is a Bill related post, concept, or story, but honestly, for anyone who paid hard-earned cash to watch Nathan Peterman wilt against the Chicago Bears; for anyone whose heroes left them sobbing into their elementary-school pillows, four years in a row; for anyone who has ever been doubted, punked, had their lunch money stolen, or laughed at…

For anyone who sat through 40+ minutes of the National Pattycakes McFrogmouth League delightedly crowning the Kansas City Swifties this year’s Super Bowl (pre) Champions, you would know why…

You’d know why I read banned books.

You’d know why I get banned on message boards.

And you sure as H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks know why I love The Buffalo Bills.

Two and Oh, No!

The NFL’s stable of unstable talking heads are full of phraseology this time of the year. You hear lines like the following: “The first...
